The flight testing of new military aircraft is a hazardous occupation, especially where development is of necessity speeded up to meet urgent wartime requirements. This comprehensive book details in chronological sequence some 1,253 major accidents occurring in the UK between 1940 and 1971 to military aircraft under flight test and development.
It covers the period from the formation of the wartime Ministry of Aircraft Production in 1940 until the end of 1971, so as to observe the 30-year Rule for the release of official information, data having been obtained from both official and company archives as well as other accredited sources. Each entry includes a narrative description of what happened, the fate of the crew members and any other relevant information. There are numerous appendices, with a name index and an index of individual aircraft.
The book runs to 224 pages, with around 170 photographs illustrating many of the actual aircraft concerned, in a number of cases showing the wreckage resulting from the crash.
