Another WW1 epic, this publication covers the development and service of the D.H.4, D.H.9 and D.H.9A series, from its introduction in 1917 into the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service, then from April 1918 the Royal Air Force, including use by the Independent Force. Right through to 1940 when a small number were still serving with the Spanish Air Force in Morocco. The D.H.9A became a mainstay of the post-war RAF light bomber squadrons, both at home and overseas. The usual detailed individual histories of RFC/RNAS/RAF aircraft with 4,000-name indexes.
The Americanised DH-4 and its variants went into mass production in 1917, and well over 4,000 were built in addition to post-war metal-framed conversions; variants remained in service until 1932. Large well-illustrated American sections total 48 pages with 81 photographs and include serial batches and much individual information including over 600 crash details with a separate 690-entry name index. Comprehensive details are given of use by many other air forces, much of it previously unpublished. Also detailed listings of all known civil conversions with numerous photographs.
HARDBACK A4 size. 332 pages (including 16 pages of colour side-views by Dave Howley). 454 photographs. Five pages of detailed drawings by Mick Davis. Front cover painting by Dugald Cameron.
